The Paris Apartment : Romantic Decor on a Flea-Market Budget The Paris Apartment is a popular shop in New York's East Village, where visitors can step back in time and immerse themselves in the beauty and romance of antique furnishings. Reflecting an unusual mix of design influences (Baroque, rococo, neoclassical and Art Deco) and personal taste, its style is luxurious, playful, and wholly original.

In The Paris Apartment, Claudia Strasser, the founder and owner of the shop, offers readers the quintessential guide to achieving this romantic Parisian look without having to spend a fortune. With easy-to-follow instructions and helpful advice, she shows readers how they can transform their homes into a living environment that reflects both their personal style and timeless French elegance. Laid out in the form of an entertaining diary, the book helps Francophiles define their fantasy home, find inspiration, select a color palette and use light creatively. She also includes instructions for making canopies and valances; advice on dyeing fabrics and restyling furniture; tips on budgeting; guidance on shopping at flea markets and auctions; and a glossary of terms. Color photographs throughout illustrate the ideas and techniques shown in the book.

As interest in the home experiences a resurgence, and as Americans become more careful about their spending, nesting has become the pastime of the '90s. People want luxury homes without spending a fortune. With its unbeatable combination of style and solid practicality, The Paris Apartment  is a home-decorating guide to treasure and draw inspiration from for many years to come.

Comments: A beautiful, imaginative approach to inexpensive decor

Ms. Strasser has put together an incredible reference tool for budding -- and budget-minded -- home decorators. The book is small enough to throw in your pack when you head to the flea markets and auctions she writes about, and contains enough DIY information to take the mystery out of the process.

And even if you're not decorating yet, the illustrations and photos are so beautiful that they might inspire you to get started. I eagerly await her next offering

Comments: Absolute must-have for the "posh" look on a budget
This is by far my favorite decorating book. It is filled with more hints and tips to get that "jewel box" or "genie bottle" effect than any I've read. If you are creating a very elaborate, whimsical living space and need some inspiration...this is the book to get! This is the book to bring out the fairy tale prince or princess in anyone. Wonderful budget advice also. I love this book!

I absolutely loved this book! She has incredibly practical (and affordable) advice on creating beautiful, sumptuous rooms. The before and after pictures are very inspirational, and makes you think "I could do that!" You will want to redecorate every room after reading it. I can't wait to visit her store in NYC.

This book is a wonderful tribute to the Parisian decorating spirit! The photographs are truly inspirational; the address listings of the manufacturers is such a great help. The illustrations on how to repair lamps has also been of assistance. If anyone would like to incorporate Parisian style/Shabby Chic decorating styles to their home, this book has definitely got it. You will refer to this book very often. Great job!

Comments: Strasser's Paris Apartment a disappointment
Having traveled extensively in France and appreciated the wonderful decor throughout that beautiful country, I was disappointed. If you can shop in New York or Paris, you can put this book to good use for its shopping references. If you know artists who work for free or if you are an artist yourself, you can execute some of Strasser's ideas for under $1800 for the type of apartment makeovers featured. For the rest of us, better pictures, better details, more inspiration appear in House Beautiful's "Small Spaces".

I've been looking for a book like this for a long time! I flipped through it quickly, taking in all the details, and was so inspired that i completely redecorated my studio without spending a DIME... i used things i already had but hadn't thought of using for decorating.. old fabric and necklaces, bits of cording, etc... and did it all in ONE DAY... the change is amazing, i feel like i have my own personal retreat now.. it's become MY place. i've never seen another book like this and i probably never will!

I bought this book and now I am returning it. I think it has some good general ideas - e.g. how to paint your apartment, how to select things at a flea market, etc. But the pictures of actual results are uninspiring. This may simply be a difference in taste, but I think the author, whose book aims at relatively young people, decorated apartments very much in granny style. If you see the pictures, you'll know what I mean. The bottom line: the general idea is great, but the implementation is uninspiring.

Comments: Down to earth, gorgeous and practical
I finally found a book that is down to earth and practically helpful. Instead of showing me things I could not possibly create like other "fancy" decorating books, this one gave me a new way to look at my own space and actually change it for the better. It shows before and after pictures that show you how even the worst spaces can be turned into dreams without spending an arm and a leg. I took the book to Australia with me and ended up having to buy 5 more copies for friends there that loved it and had never seen anything like it. Can't wait for the next one.....more inspiration please!

Comments: Almost perfect - though not quite
The 'Paris Apartment' style is not for everyone, but it is certainly a much needed reaction to the Pottery Barn, pre-fab, one-size-fits-all approach that is sweeping the nation.

There were but two faults with this book. Firstly, it could have used more photographs, or at least captions to clearly indicate which photographs were a result of which techniques so that one doesn't have to read a whole page of text while trying to find a quick reference. Secondly, the author rather glibly assumes that one has access to patient friends who can paint murals and make stained glass for free. This may be a reasonable assumption in Manhatten, but it certainly isn't in Podunk USA and those in Podunk also want to live well.

(I must confess that I was also baffled at how everyone seemed to have a landlord who was perfectly okay with having the ceiling painted, the overhead light fixtures replaced, and the walls embellished with mouldings. Is it only in college towns that slumlords want their slums back in more-or-less the same condition they were rented out in?)

But on the whole, The Paris Apartment contains a wealth of jumping-of-points from which the active imagination can conceive of marvelous things to do with even the most awkward room.

This delightful little book is full of unusual ideas for turning ordinary apartments into luxurious salons without spending a fortune. Although not all of us have artist friends who will paint murals for us, there are still plenty of fun, chic ideas in this book. I love browsing through it!

The Author is to me a hypocrite... She goes on and on in this book about cheap chic and decor on a budget, decorating an entire apartment for under 1800 dollars, but on her site, it is nearly impossible to find furinutre under $2000! The make overs turned perfectly fine apartments into rooms loaded withe ugly 50s and 60s garbage. I would highly recommend the garage sale decorator's bible by shelly kincad instead. It lacks photos, but the info is wonderful!

Comments: A Charming & very informative book....an inspiration too!
This book is fantastic. I followed Claudia's tips and now have furnished the majority of my home with beautiful things....and very affordable as well. It's true...a little paint and fabric will go a long way. I am so pleased with the way things came together. I took before and after shots and WOW...what a feeling of accomplishment! I am disturbed that the previous person who reviewed this book referred to the author a hypocrite. Her opinion was that her store/website is expensive. Well, the book teaches us how to find beauties in the rough ourselves. She shares her secrets as well as her sources. What more could the average person ask for. Claudia has to make a living too.

Comments: Let's be clear here
This is an excellent book IF the reader is clear about what it's going to contain.

It has one really outstanding feature: the idea that you can let your personal fantasy inspire the way you decorate and live. At a time when too many people are slaves to someone else's fashions and want what they're told to want, this is a breath of fresh air. How much more exciting to start by thinking "inside, I feel that I'm a Roaring 20's flapper!" rather than "well, I guess I should get something to match the plaid couch"!

Having said that, it's true that not every photo in the book will appeal to you. After all, these are very personal looks she's showing.

And yes, it helps a lot if you're at least slightly artsy or have gifted friends, although she does make a couple suggestions about getting artists to work for not-too-much-$$.

Other caveats:

-- this is absolutely not a hand-holding how-to book. If you want instructions on a paint technique or something, this isn't the place to get it. This book is about inspiration, not step by step instruction.

-- yes, you can find real bargains on furniture and accessories IF you're willing to hunt for a darn long time. If going to yard sales is fun for you, you're golden. If you want your place decorated NOW, you're going to have to pay a bunch more than she's talking about. Again, buy this book for inspiration rather than because you want budget decorating tips.

-- there should be more (and sometimes clearer) photos.

Comments: What a waste of glossy paper!
I ordered this title expecting a sophisticated interior design book that would provide me with decorating ideas. Instead, I got this silly vanity project filled with puzzling and anachronistic illustrations yanked from 19th century books and magazines and photos of the author's friends/clients playing dress-up. Photographs that actually capture the "Paris Apartment" look are few and far between. (And, don't let the price tag fool you--this is a small book of 144 pages, made smaller by the large font and other space-swallowing page design strategies used.) The book isn't a "how-to" either. Most of Strasser's descriptions of decorating techniques are sketchy and self-serving.
Then there's the text! Here's a sample: "Kirsty, a hard-working model, fills long hours with a hectic schedule and travels all over the globe . . . Kirsty herself was the inspiration for our beautification plans: An angel both in temperment and appearance, she belongs in an aerie in the clouds. When the pressures of earthly life deplete her spirits, she can fly away home to her secret haven." I bet the book's ghostwriter is counting his or her lucky stars that it's not their name on this miracle of literary ineptitude.
In the five years I've been buying books from Amazon, this is the only one I've ever returned. If you are even remotely interested in decorating, design, good taste, or for that matter, books, hit your back button now. A truly loathsome title that attempts to capitalize on current decorating trends...

Comments: To Identify & Start Working With Your Own Decorative Style
*The Paris Apartment* is the perfect book for the (perhaps slightly artsy) person who loves the myriad luxurious looks of days gone by. The book is not for the complete beginner, as Claudia Strasser definitely seems to direct her book to those who already know that they prefer a slightly cluttered luxuriousness to a stark modernity. (Although I believe that those who prefer the latter can learn a lot from her techniques.) The book is also not for the insecure, as Strasser does not sit down and load the reader with facts, dimensions, rules and schemes. Instead, her book is a friendly inspiration to those who already have an inkling for what they like and simply need a few helpful ideas and few suggested techniques to get them started.

Strasser fills her book with lovely inspirational and historical quotes and illustrations, but perhaps the most helpful things about it are the informational boxes in which she gives the reader helpful tips on how to achieve many of the looks within: tints and washes, dying fabrics, wall stencils, drapes & valances, duvet covers, reupholstering, rinceau, furniture refinishing, flea market savvy, restoring a chandelier, etc. These boxes, for me, truly make this book "Romantic Decor on a Flea Market Budget," as they show the reader how to *make* many of the items in the book. Books that feature flea-market finds usually only take their readers halfway, as once the readers are at the flea-market it lies upon to fate for the perfect objects to cross their paths. *The Paris Apartment,* however, demonstrates to its readers techniques that allow them to take control of at least some parts of their decorative destiny. It is certainly possible to pay someone to do these things or to go out and buy a $600 duvet cover, but it is infinitely cheaper to do them oneself.

Something about Strasser's tone in the text *does,* however, occasionally make one feel as though she is a bit amateur-ish. Part of me wanted to feel as though there were a slightly more authoritative voice behind this book and its ideas. However, I also believe that the authoritative voice one might feel as though the book lacked on occasion is in some ways in opposition to the free-flowing concepts of creatively exploring one's own decorative style that *The Paris Apartment* embodies. The book, in some ways, rejects "authority" and serves, instead, as "decorative friend," making the reader feel as though s/he is exploring his or her own taste with a fellow adventurer in the decorative arts.

I went to school in Paris and have spent much of my adult life commuting back and forth to Paris. I bought this book because it seemed relevant to my life. BUT I have never seen a Paris apartment that looked anything like these. I have no idea why they call the book Paris Apartments. If you want your apartment to look like it's right out of the "red light" district, a cabaret, or the Moulin Rouge, go ahead and buy this book. Otherwise, don't waste your money.

This a beautiful book. I'd heard about it as a good source of ideas. I had been looking for a book that expressed my taste in decor, but I wasn't able to put my finger on what I was looking for. This book solved that. As soon as it arrived I wasn't able to put it down, the pictures are more than ideas, they take you to a place and time of early Paris, you can really day dream in this book. There is also helpful information on how to create the look of a romantic Paris apartment. I shared the book with a friend and she also could not put it down. I am very please and happy thatI was able to locate the book on Amazon.com and now have possession of this lovely book.

Comments: Beautiful Writing
This book is written with the very romantic notion (that I love) that home should be a beautiful haven from the outside world. I enjoy reading the nearly poetic way the writer describes her revamping projects. The flea market makeovers are good, and many things really can be fixed with a new coat of paint and a plush new cushion.
Basically, in this book, the writer (along with a group of people) redecorate several apartments which badly needed help. What is wonderful about this book is that each apartment is decorated to suit it's owner specifically, and that you are given many different ideas for mock-period decoration (Gothic, Rocco, Victorian etc).
So why didn't this book get a higher rating? Well, not all of the ideas are very practical (not that decoration is necessarily practical) but some of the ideas are not so good. For example, a bathroom is revamped by hot gluing glass beads to the outside of a tub. It seems obvious that the moisture build-up in the bathroom would cause these pretty baubles to fall off, or if you were able to afix them to the point of never being removed, you would have to pay charges when you moved out and your landlord had to replace the tub! Also, in many apartments you are simply not allowed to paint your walls, which is about 50% of the restoration work described in the book. It would have been nice if this book was more geared to home owners or if they showed methods which apartment dwellers could actually use without incurring the wrath of their landlord.

Comments: Richly illustrated book of great decorating ideas
If you love the look of old Hollywood glamour, of rich velvet and smooth satin fabrics combined with anitque, vintage furniture, this is the book for you. The ideas are great for both apartments (if your apartment lets you paint, you will love all the ideas) and houses. This book has totally changed what I look for in furniture, both new and vintage, and shown me how to "think outside the box" in decorating more than ever before. The pictures of other people's "Paris Apartments" are extremely inspirational. If nothing else, this book is worth the price just for the pictures, and, though small, it makes an excellent coffee table book. I love it!

Comments: Too, too much!
I love old, glamourous things, pieces with history and beauty. There are plenty of them in this book, but as a decorating guide, I found it a little too rich for my taste. Some rooms are over the top, and some, to me, are hideous! But taste is a very individual thing. Rachel Ashwell's Shabby Chic books are more my style, I think.

Comments: Paris in Florida
First, I think it is important to point out that this book is more of a romantic idea and style, and yeah -- you probably won't find a lot of apartments in Paris that are decorated like this, so comparing it to REAL Paris apartments is a little unfair...

Having said that, this is a perfect book for someone who is especially creative and artistic. I already had an idea of what I wanted, and had decorated quite a bit. However this book really gave me a reference.

If you are willing to look, and are up for a search you can decorate for less the $1,800 but you do have to put effort into the hunt. Flea Markets, Garage Sales, Discount stores like TJ MAXX and Ross's if you have them in your area have been a wonderful source for me.

If you are a romantic and a dreamer -- this book is for you

Comments: Just Not Practical
If you are looking for a book that can inspire you, perhaps this is it. However, I just didn't find this book to be practical in the least. Every room was so over the top, you wonder how anyone could accomplish anything in these apartments. I understand the idea of a haven, but i kept thinking about all of the dust that could get stuck in all of the billows of fabric and trinkets that were were literally wall-to-wall in every room. And where to sit? Where do you eat? There was NO "virgin" space that could be considered useful.
I consider myself to have a pretty open mind, but nothing in this book was worth keeping. I returned it the day I recieved it. I agree that any of Rachel Ashwell's books would be a better buy than this. Her books are great for inspiring your home, but also inspire party ideas and treasure hunts.

Comments: Lovely rooms, but maybe not for everyone
Two caveats: (1) "The Paris Apartment" is the name of the author's NYC shop. There is nothing in the book about Paris, per se. And (2), this book is rather NYC-centric.

That said, her idea that decor based on elderly or second-hand items should be based on an underlying fantasy (i.e., the room will be more successful if you decide you want it to specifically evoke a Victorian conservatory or a Lord of the Rings bordello or whatever, than if you just set one old thing next to another old thing and hope for the best) is a good one, and her advice on how to achieve such an effect is comfortingly systematic. The photos are pretty too.

When I flipped through the pages of "The Paris Apartment", my eyes were dazzled with the images and my heart raced with excitement! The beautiful photographs and ideas were so fresh and beautiful and I knew I had to buy this book. I have poured over every page dozens of times, and I always seem to notice something new. I love the idea of Paris, and I love the way in which Claudia has captured the romance of what many people perceive is the Paris style of decorating. For those of us who are dreamers; for anyone who has an ounce of creativity; and for artistic souls who just love unusual and romantic ideas, this book is an inspiration. Comments: Very Specific and Lovely Book
I read this book a number of years ago and came across it again when researching a move into a small condo. I agree that it is a wonderful book as the antithesis of potterybarn and restoration hardware living that is enough to kill anyone with an independant idea- and while the author's style is too fussy for me, I love the text and the pace of the book. I would highly recommend it to someone who believes in interior decoration as a theory, a passion, if not a practicality.

Don't bother owning this book unless you happen to have a group of artist friends waiting in the wings to help you with your decorating strategy. But wait--if you have a group of artist friends, why do you need this book? There are some pretty pictures of over-the-top Manhattan apartments, but that is basically it. The moral of the book: it's better to scrounge around flea markets, thrift stores, etc. for neat pieces with good lines and fix them up than settle for Ikea.
