Comments: A Must Have Decorating Book
This book shed light on how to create a conversation area by using the furniture and accessories you already have! By adding one or two new pieces, or by simply rearranging what you already own, you can create the right kind of flow. Your old stuff looks new simply by the rearrangement! Not to mention the "finished" look you'll get from following the author's tips. The before and after photos, although not great, provided me with good examples of how to deal with my own problem spaces. This was one of the better books on design I've read as the author encourages you to put emphasis on your favorite things, eliminate clutter, and make a room truly comfortable. I continue to refer to this book while my other books, coffee table perfect as they are, gather dust as they simply aren't as practical as this one.

This book provides clear examples of how to arrange furniture and accessories that you already own to provide a more comfortable and pleasing space. Its been a great reference tool and has made a noticeable difference in the appearance of my homes. One of those books that you'll refer to when you constantly look at a room and think whats not working? Terrific.

Comments: Excellent, clear advice gives you fast, inexpensive results
If you don't have a lot of decorating experience, and want fast, clean results without spending a fortune, this book is for you. The author's prose is clear and direct, and she's not afraid of making clear calls without seeming dictatorial. Before and after pictures of case studies show how often all it takes to pull a room together is a bit of smart rearrangement of furniture and accessories that you already have. Highly recommended for the decorating beginner. About all that would be needed to make this a five-star book would be color pictures throughout.

Comments: Great decorating basics book that lives up to it's name
The author makes good on her promise. She shows you how to make the furniture and accessories you have work their best for you. You'll be inspired to use the stuff you've got stored away as well. I was amazed at the before and after photos. Some of the furnishings she works with are uglier than my own stuff and she makes them look great. She comes on very strong with her decorating "rules"; but, hey, if you're a novice looking for guidance, she gives definitive advice that works well. Now I find myself thumbing my nose at decorators who can't master these simple concepts.

Comments: Great how-to information
This book does well in identifying the common mistakes people make in furniture placement, and gives real solutions that many other books lack. However, the lack of color bothered me, maybe because I'm such a visual person. If you liked this book, try "Fabrique Technique" a how-to on fabric corrdination. It has lots of color and examples of rooms, with a system of using 3 fabrics. Easy to understand like Ms. Ward's book.

Lauri Ward is a dynamo! I can't believe how wonderfully simple her book is to help the "decorating challenged" and even more than that you don't have to spend any more money than what the book cost you! Forget all those interior decorators, (I've tried one out and it was more of a headache than anything else) just buy this book!

Comments: Practical advice
While this book did offer some practical advice, I was somewhat disappointed. The majority of the book focuses on the living room, and Ms. Ward does a good job of discussing typical mistakes people make with furniture placement and how to solve them. She does a great job of showing how to create comfortable conversation areas and attractive room arrangements. However, very little attention is paid to other rooms in the house. In addition, her "rules" are rather restrictive and in some cases just don't make sense (eg., only put books on bookshelves - never mix in photos or knick knacks! Or, no artwork in the bedroom!) Some of the redos seemed a little obvious(she madeover one dining room by actually putting the chairs around the table). The book could have benefited from some better photographs, possibly color (they are all b&w). Note: if you are looking for painting techniques or window treatments, this is not the book for you.

Comments: I agree with the previous review
The book isn't as broad in scope as I'd hoped, and I assumed it would have great photos, which it doesn't. Some good tips, but I'll take this book back to the store. Here's my recommendation: For Xmas I received The New Decorating Book, which gives me more help and also seems pretty focused on the way most of us decorate using the things we have-it is telling me how things go together, and it also has a realistic look and lots of big color pictures obviously taken in real homes.

Comments: A Winner!
This is the first decorating book I've ever read that gave me information that was useful the minute I put it down. Every other design book I've read has had beautiful color photos but has been frustrating because I can't afford what they show. The before and after photos in this one really hit home-literally! A few hours after I read this book I had created a totally different atmosphere in my foyer, living room and dining room. The only money I spent was on new lampshades in the living room and a large, new frame for my dining room art. This book is a must for anyone who enjoys decorating and wants to have a prettier, more comfortable home.

Comments: The Answer to "Where Do I Start?"
The genius of this book is that it gives you a firm foundation for any decorating you want to do, and you can do it WITHOUT SPENDING ANY MONEY! This book is the first and last word on furniture arrangement for non-professionals, and it doesn't tell you to buy new furniture before you start. This is not a comprehensive book on the whole decorating/design process, but it does teach by realistic example, it's thorough, and it's easy to understand. No, there are not a lot of color pictures, but color is not the point of this book. The photographs feature the sort of furniture and rooms that most of us are dealing with, rather than fantasy rooms that few of us can afford. I found it very helpful to see the bare bones without having every detail planned out for me. I do wish the author had ventured beyond the living room--perhaps most people request a re-design of their public rooms. However, what I learned certainly helped me to plan other spaces in my new house. If she ever does a book on other rooms of the home, I'd stand in line to buy it. I agree that some of her ideas are arbitrary, and I don't buy all of them. I have to admit, however, that removing the photographs and odd objects from our bookshelves considerably improved their appearance. This book is a wonderful companion to other decorating books you may all ready have or plan to buy. And it may save you a lot of money!

Comments: Good basic start
You really can improve the look of your home (without spending a dime!) by following the basics in furniture and accessory arrangement presented here. The before and after photos look like they were shot in real homes - not designer showplaces. I'll also able to use the principles when I AM able to buy something new. This book may have prevented a costly mistake in selecting a major piece of new furniture. "Use What You Have" is definitely for the common masses though. Anyone with any type of design background experience would know these basic principles.

Comments: An excellent book on arranging
I found this book to be extremly helpful because it guides you through creating a visually pleasing home that is also functional by rearranging items that you already have. So many people have beautiful things in their home and expensive furniture, but do not arrange these items so their rooms "work". This book gives you practical advice that you can really implement in an hour or two. It fullfills a need that is overlooked in most interior decorating books.

This book does not focus on interior decorating as a whole or the components that are traditionally addressed in interior decorating books(picking a style, a color theme, window treatments, picking furniture and accessories). This book concentrates on the arranging portion of decorating. The book does not contain color photos (However, I did not find that to be an issue and actually found black and white to be helpful in this case because it didn't distract me from the topics). If you are looking for a book to guide you through the overall decorating process, you will be disappointment with this book. Check out Better Homes and Gardens New Decorating Book for a complete book on interior decorating. However, if you are looking for a book to help you arrange your stuff, then you will be absolutely thrilled with this book and the results you produce.

I have read many interior decorating books, trying to put my home in order. I tried so many different things, and made many costly mistakes, and my home never had the look I wanted it to. After reading Ms. Ward's book, my house is finally a place for me to come home to. My friends all comment on how much better my home looks, although they can't figure out how I did it without buying all new furniture! I would reccomend this book to everyone who knows that their home has not reached it's full potential, and who doesn't have money to buy all new things. Thanks to Ms. Ward for finally writing a book that makes interior decorating available to the average consumer.

Comments: This book seems a little amateurish...
This book does help one view a home's design more objectively, however Laurie Ward does throw a few too many "musts" and other rules around. Her designs are indeed uncluttered and often reflect a marked improvement over the "before" photos. However, many of her "after" photos are lacking in real warmth and personality. I believe this book to be helpful to those who are just starting out and need rules-oriented "hand holding," but would not recommend Use What You Have Decorating to those who wish their homes to be rich with texture, personality and comfort.

The title sounded so good, but the book disappointed me. No great pictures and only limited ideas. I liked some of the room arranging tips which, although not new or original, are practical. But the author has some silly, dictatorial rules that just don't fit today's way of decorating to suit one's own tastes.

This book taught me what three interior designers I paid to help me failed to. It is basic furniture placement, and interior design concepts. Comments: Ordinary ideas that are badly executed
I can only assume this book has sold on-line because people cannot see it first. The ideas are basic and not creative, but the worst part is that the after shots are dreary and not well done at all. Pick up a good home magazine or decorating book instead of this one. You would not want your home to look like these pictures.

Comments: Really useful
What I like about this book is that I can apply it right away and make a big difference in my day-to-day life without repainting, buying new stuff (that I wouldn't know what to do with, anyway) or starting from scratch. I just redid my living room and can't believe it's the same place. Her ideas are simple but may take a little playing with to get it right--I tried 2 or 3 versions until it all popped into place. Now it's my turn to fine tune things with my artwork and collections, but already things are both more cozy and spacious, adult yet personalized -- and give me a groundwork from which to work. Once things are clarified, it's easy to know exactly what I need (if anything) to make the room work best. I love books on interior design, but this is the first one I have been able to apply instead of just dream about.

Comments: Very Bad Indeed
I really wanted to like this book, but unfortunately it was very disappointing. The "After" photographs all tend to look like waiting rooms and the photography within the book is quite amateurish, as was pointed out by other reviewers. And the author dictates far too many hard and fast "rules" to the reader without real regard to logic or personal taste. With few exceptions, the redone rooms lack life or personal style - most are rather sterile and uninviting. The main focus of the book is on living rooms, a technique which grows tedious quickly. Allover, a major disappointment.

I have looked through many, many decorating books and magazines. I have never found one as helpful as this book. I could immediately begin to see things in my own home that, with little effort, could make a dramatic difference. It has helped to give me an "eye" for decorating rather than a picture to copy. I can go into any room now, and start to see the principals outlined in this book. I hope there will be more from this author.

This is a very unattractive book. The photos look more like bad snapshots of boring, cold rooms. Totally uninspiring. As a homeowner and a designer, I like the idea of working with what I already have, but many decorating books help me do that while also showing me beautiful yet believable photos of rooms. I am always tweaking what I already have, and my favorite decorating book remains The New Decorating Book. Another favorite is Flea Market Decorating.

Comments: Amazingly Quick & Easy Solutions For Real Homes
When I sent my sister this book for her birthday she called to tell me that it was the first decorating book she had ever read that actually helped her figure out what to do with her house.(I was thrilled because she has read them all.) She insisted that I read it too, because I had never quite figured out what to do with my master bedroom and downstairs rooms. Four days later I received the paperback, read it in one sitting was truly amazed. When I started correcting the mistakes I had made (all ten!), my house actually began to look pretty terrific! Although the photos are black and white, I found that it made it easier for me to spot the mistakes. I really liked the fact that the homes are real homes like mine and not fantasy houses that are usually in decorating books. All I can say is that if I can do it, anyone can.

Unlike so many of the interior decorating books on the market, this one stays within the realm of the real world and gives good practical advice on how to make a room full of furniture work. The before and after shots of each room, along with a list of what she banished or bought, are fun to study. Comments: You can't use EVERYTHING you have...
I bought this book along with the Flea Market Decorating Book and the BH&G new decorating book. This one came in first and I settled down to "decorate" with what I have. I kept reading, but I found the book a bit formulaic. Works well for people who do not have a lot of stuff, but if you do, you are kind of out of luck. The look the author goes for is pretty sterile, and while I respect her basic design principles, I believe that there are other options available as well. I find magazines and the other two books more to my taste as far as looks go. This book is largely line drawings and cold snapshots. If you are seeking advice on how to arrange enormous collections or a lot of stuff--this WON'T help you. It seems that her main advice there is "put it in the closet."

Comments: I CAN DO THIS!
Finally, a book for those of us who are "decorating challenged". What it does really well is show how to arrange furniture and hang artwork so that your home is comfortable. Lots of good before and after diagrams and photos make it easy to understand the author's points. I appreciated the examples from real life and not idealized magazine houses.

I've arranged my living room furniture many different ways and never knew why it didn't work. In one day, I rearranged the stuff we already had and everyone in the family felt immediately more comfortable (even my husband who dislikes change). I even found room for the piano which had been stuck in my daughter's bedroom.

This book does not address colors, patterns, walls, floors or window treatments or what furniture to buy if you are replacing a lot of pieces. Will have to find another source for those. Meanwhile, make the most of what you already have!

I was disappointed in this book from the start, but it wasn't until I got to this little gem regarding wall color that I knew I'd be carting it off to the second-hand store: "For most people, white is the safest choice. It is neutral and will save you the anxiety of choosing from the hundreds of colors that are available." Talk about condescending to your readers... blech.

I suggest a more accurate subtitle -- something along the lines of "Transform Your Home into the Blandest Possible Landscape Using Ten Rudimentary Design Principles."

Props to the author, though, for reducing clutter in nearly all "Afters."

Comments: A Huge Disappointment
I found this book to be a huge disappointment and a complete waste of my money. It is a book that does nothing but gives you ideas about how to rearrange your furniture, which I think anyone who has any sense can figure out how to do without buying this book. I was hoping for a book that would teach me how to spruce up my old couch, give me ideas for painting old furniture, give me suggestions for slipcovers, something like what I get from the TV show "Trading Spaces." Instead, I got a lot of pictures of rooms that looked really ugly before the furniture was rearranged and looked only slightly less ugly afterwards.

Comments: The Most Useful Decorating Book I Own
I have dozens of decorating books. Most of them feature a particular style or document the decorating characteristics of a foreign country. These books are beautiful and fun to read. Unfortunately they have not been very helpful in decorating my own Manhattan shoebox apartment.

This book, however, is a noteable exception. The pictures are all black and white, and some of them are slightly fuzzy. But the text is very clear. I have been trying for at least a decade to get my furniture arranged correctly. It is now perfect, thanks to the very simple instructions in this book. And my art is hung correctly, my lighting is both functional and attractive, and I am comfortable in my own home. When people come to visit for the first time, they frequently say, "Wow! Who decorated this place?" All the credit goes to Lauri Ward, who has addressed a real need.

If you want to look at pretty pictures, this is not the book for you. But if you want to carefully analyse your rooms and figure out how to make them look wonderful using mainly items you already own, this is the book for you.

With two small children and no time to make my house look good, this book saved the day. It showed me what I was doing wrong (a lot!) and how to fix my mistakes immediately. The best part was that I got really quick results without spending money. It is a fast read, non-threatening and has photos of actual rooms the author redid which show her principles. If you want to look at pictures of gorgeous homes, this book is not for you. But if you want to learn how to make your house look better than you ever thought possible, this is a must-have you'll refer to over and over.

This book is probably very helpful to people who really struggle with furniture placement and just where to start in decorating their home. Because I've had more experience in decorating my various apartments, houses, and condos over the years, this book was too elementary for me. For those just starting out, I think this book would be great. It is all text with a few black, grey and white drawings, NO photos - so if you're looking for colour and photos, skip this book. Otherwise, I think it's helpful to the beginning homeowner/renter just out of college/university or for those who just don't have the creativity to compose a room on their own

I hate most of my furniture!

But, since I'm not ready to go out and buy new things, I'm doomed to living with what I have for the time being.

The other day however, I was in the bookstore and picked up Ms. Ward's book. I just loved it!! I went home and set myself to work on my apartment, correcting her ten common decorating mistakes and changing my home. The principles she uses are straightforward and easy to understand, as well as being a quick and easy read, and although at first I missed having those beautiful glossy color photos, I soon realized that the lack thereof helped me to concentrate on dealing with the things I had, not dreaming of new things that I could buy (but never would).

I changed the whole look of my apartment in one evening, and I didnt have to buy anything. Although I still hate some of my furniture, it made my whole apartment look better and feel so much more comfortable.

I think it is a very good book. As the author says, read the entire book first and then start to rearrange you furniture. I was amazed how easy it was to change the look of my living room just by applying a few simple rules described in this book. I wish the author gave some examples about other rooms: bedrooms, bathrooms, and hallways.
However, once you are done rearranging your living/family room furniture, it is good idea to get an additional book about interior decorating: with COLOR pictures. Eventually, you want to 'spread your wings', to add some more color (maybe paint the walls some other color then the recommended white or beige), use more fabric and different textures. I got 'The New Decorating Book (Better Homes and Gardens)', paperback, which I leaf through frequently to get more ideas.

This is a great book for anyone who has a lot of stuff but stills feels uncomfortable in their space. It is also a great book for someone who is just starting out, because it will clue you in to what are the important elements in creating a welcoming home.

This is the best interior decorating book I have ever read. It doesn't show pretty pictures, leaving you to wonder how you can possible recreate the spectacular rooms in your own home; it truly imparts KNOWLEDGE. After reading this book I felt that I had learned something, not just been saturated with images. Most decorating books make you want to go out and buy more stuff. Not this one. It makes you look around your house with a new set of eyes.
While most of the book is about furniture arrangement, there is also information on lighting, colors, walls, window treatments, etc. The author does not promote any particular style, and the examples she use range from shabby chic to suburban-traditional.
After reading this book, I re-arranged my furniture, moved the art on my walls, and reframed some photographs, and my house looks 100% better.

I love decorating books. I go to the bookstore and look at them all. And I buy 6 or 7 of them a year. I admit I did not buy this one. It sounded so good, but open it and it's terrible. The ideas the author, whom I've never heard of, writes about are OK, but they are nothing newl, and they could be summed up in one nice magazinze article. I buy a decorating book for big glorious color photos as much as for the writing, and this book does NOT have those photos. It's a big disappointment, and it's a surprise in this day and age to find a decorating book that that looks as if it were printed about 30 years ago before color photos were common. The only reason this must sell online is that people love the title but don't realize that they aren't getting much for their money.

Comments: too many restrictions
A better title for this book would have been "How to Rearrange Your Single Purpose Living Room If You Have a Fireplace And Nice Furniture to Create a Comfortable Conversation Area". She talks exclusively about living rooms and 90% of the problems she shows are solved by moving the furniture closer together so people can hold a conversation comfortably. And not just any living room but a certain kind of formal living room. Almost every room she shows has a fireplace and has a very regular geometric shape. How do I create a focal point if my living room is an octagon with windows on almost every wall and no windowless wall is big enough to put a couch under? Only one room she shows has a television in it. How do I create a comfortable conversation area that also lets me (and my guests) watch television? How can the fireplace be the focal point of the room if I also have a television in it? What if I live in a 800 square foot apartment and don't have the space for the strict separation of duties that she seems to advocate? What if I don't have a family room to put the television in? What if I don't like my furniture or want to add to my collection? While I find her low-cost use-what-you-already-have approach a nice alternative to the spend-$20,000-and-change-everything approach, sometimes just rearranging your furniture and art isn't going to cut it.

Instead what we get are 10 basic design guidelines. And I do mean basic. I honestly have to wonder about all of these people who have fireplaces and don't use them as the focal point of the room. While it seems like what she says is just common sense, I suppose there is some good in having it written down. It just seems like it isn't really enough information to fill an entire book and then charge $16 for it.

I didn't find the lack of color as annoying as some other reviewers but that's because Ward's design consists primarily of physical arrangement; the use of color wouldn't have helped make things much clearer but definitely would have added to the cost of the book. Towards the end of the book she gives some lip service to the use of color and in that part of the book color photographs would have been useful.

It is also somewhat surprising that a book published in 1998 (my edition was published in October 1999) doesn't have a single URL to any of the sources she provides at the end of the book.

Comments: Use...or 'unuse'? what you have....
I am going to give this book 4 stars because I have referred to it again and again, but...it does have some limitations. I am "decorationally challenged", to say the least. My husband usually ends up picking out most of our furniture. I am prone to buying weird, off beat things at yard sales, but then...can't really use them as effectively as Martha S. or Mary E. Get the picture? I received this book as a gift.

It is a great book for basic design principals. It helped me right away to set up seating arrangements, balance the objects in a room, hang pictures at a uniform height, and generally "declutter" the house somewhat. I didn't feel like I had to go out and buy something new. I simply used what we had already. Sometimes when you read decorating books, you are assailed with all kinds of projects that the normal, average person could not possibly complete. For example, finding 10 yards of inexpensive mint, quality upholstry fabric (in the right color) at a clearance or yard sale; finding the right kind of used sofa that would just look great in your home; and, finally, sewing a slipcover for it with said fabric without a pattern! Who has time time or skills for this? Some may, but I don't. That is why I love this book -- it uses what you have, with very few exceptions. There are many practical tips for streamlining and fostering a "clean" feeling in the house, such as using only white paper towels and other paper goods; and, keeping collections together and not all over the place. Emphasis is placed on overall look of the room, flow of traffic, and setting up seating so that it can be used effectively by people.

However, I would agree with one of the previous reviewers. If you have a lot of stuff, well...the book doesn't give you very many options. In addition, if you have "problem" areas, like too many windows and not enough wall space, or oddly shaped rooms (not just sqare or rectangle), or one room that is too large, or a lot of open space, etc., the book does not address those issues specifically. The book is heavily focused on the front room/seating areas/family room areas of the house. There is very little about bedrooms or other types of rooms, like offices, etc.

The author is somewhat dogmatic about what she sees as "bad design" (empasis mine). For example, she doesn't like doilies, refrigerator magnets, or hanging pictures on walls that are less than 18" across. Sorry, if you have kids, you have those magnets!! And, well...my mom expects me to display her handmade doilies!

And, yet...I keep going back to it again and again for the basic, simple principles that are helping me to refine our home decor. Did I mention that I could probably use an interior decorator? Ok, so with that said, maybe this author could come up with a supplemental "problem room" book, or one that addresses some of the issues outlined above.

I recommend this book to all who are challenged like myself!

Comments: A Decorating Book for Real People
If you know nothing about decorating concepts, as I did before I read this book, you will get maximum benefit from this book. Unlike most books on home decor, this book does not assume that you live in a giant house and have unlimited funds to remodel and buy all new furniture and accessories. Instead, the author explains how to rearrange what you already have in a comfortable way and recognize decorating mistakes you are currently making. The before and after photos are of real-life houses, not show rooms. And I have to say that some of the rooms were pretty unattractive before the author rearranged the room. The results of just a few simple changes are amazing though. This is really the only practical book on decorating I've ever read.

Lauri Ward has created the most useable decorating book I've ever read. The way she takes an existing room and rearranges what's there is pretty amazing. The photos are clear. The advice simple. Very refreshing with so many other books out there showing the finished product, without taking into account that most people aren't starting with an empty room and an unlimited budget. Good job, Ms. Ward!

Maybe I just didn't need this book, since I've been practicing "use what I have decorating" all my life. I mean, what other kind of decorating is there? Maybe I thought it would teach me something new. Maybe I'm just upset with myself that I bought it without seeing the real-life book. If I had looked it over in a brick-and-mortar store, I would not have purchased it. Maybe I'm just upset that I didn't think of writing it myself! If you have any decorating instincts at all, you don't need this book.

This is not a comprehensive guide to decorating but neither does it claim to be. The author promises to help you arrange your rooms in a more livable way. She delivers on this promise by sticking to a few core guidelines and hammering them home throughout the book in many different real world examples.

How useful is this book? After reading her advice on bathrooms and spending less $50 on new acccessories our guest bath was transformed dramatically for the better. If you want advice on how to decorate from scratch there are many books better than this one. But if you want a practical guide to get the most out of what you already have then you will definitely want to try this book out.

This book is a dream come true for anyone who loves decorating, but has never been able to get their home to look the way they wanted it to. (That would be me.)
The author answered questions I have always had but couldn't find the answers to in other books. Using her suggestions I have been able to correct my mistakes without spending much money and with surprisingly terrific results. Although it does not have glossy photos, this is the first book that actually helped me make my home look better as soon as I finished it. I am looking forward to reading her new book next.

This book was great for us. We moved out of state and were starting with lots of odd pieces of furntiure. This helped us with design fundamentals by giving concrete ideas and no-nos. Lots of these types books give photos of cool rooms but no real explanation of why it works. She spells it out for you. I would buy this book again.

Comments: The title of the book says it all...
This really is a great book for making your home more attractive and comfortable without spending money! It's not about coming up with a new style, but just after skimming through the first few chapters I did a few things to my living room that made it look so much more balanced and attractive.

Her examples mostly show rooms that are done in styles that I don't like at all and that don't look anything like mine, but that doesn't matter. The principles were still well illustrated and easy to apply.

I disagree with her on some points, just because my taste is different from hers, but it was easy to ignore her on those things or translate it to what I do like.

I would say if you already know a lot about interior decorating, this is probably not the book for you, unless you want something that deals with making the place feel comfortable, flow and balance, not styles (some of the authors clients apparently had used interior decoraters and were still not happy with how their rooms felt, the traffic flow, etc).

Comments: Get this book before spending more money on decorating!
I have to admit I wasn't sure if I'd like this book, mostly because it didn't have glossy pictures, and/or up-to-the minute decors. I read it anyway, and I've changed my mind. Most decorating books will have pretty pictures of georgeous interiors, however, except for fluffy, evasive comments, they fail to tell you why the rooms work.

"Use What You Have Decorating" is different.

This book shows you the 10 most common mistakes in decorating, and how to fix them. These include: lack of focal point, furniture placement that inhibit conversations, too much art or knick-knacks, uneven sight lines (roller coster effect), poor lighting. Detailed explanations include before and after pictures, floor layouts, as well as a list of what pieces were removed or added (usually very little).

This is not a style book, nor does it pretend to be. The black and white photography portrays average and down to earth homes, decorated in a variety of styles, mostly traditional (and yes, boring), but they still work, and that's why I like the book. Read this book to determine the best layout for your room, but look elsewhere for eye candy.

I recommend this book, if not for styling, but for the information it gives. A good starting point in decorating your home.

Comments: Down-to-earth advice for everyone
The most useful feature of this book is the list of major decorating mistakes: the author illustrates them clearly, so you can see why they are mistakes, and offers simple, inexpensive solutions. The before-and-after black and white photos of unmistakeably real homes (first two pages: what's wrong here? overleaf: how did we fix it?) are very convincing. You'll get a lot of basic knowledge out of this book: how to create a good conversation space, how to create "flow" in a room, how to avoid visual clutter, what to do with collections. Her method of presentation teaches you what questions you need to ask yourself in order to show your own furniture and space to its best advantage. Which is what decorating is all about, right?

I have a few quibbles: why does Ward assume that only men are interested in good hi-fi equipment while women would be happy with anything that doesn't interfere with their decorating scheme?? I beg to differ... Her style is generally rather "feminine" - she'll encourage you to use lots of pillows and throws - which isn't for everyone.

The only major gap in this book is how to use colour to improve the look of your space. She's of the "white and/or beige is best for all rooms" school. Boring, boring, boring. Myself, I'm fixing to paint my dining room red.

I read this book and transformed three rooms in my home in just two evenings. you will learn to isolate each wall, looking for alignment and balance. The examples are all living rooms but the concepts apply to every room. I didn't move that much furniture, only a couple of pieces. I also pared down my accessories and the livingroom/dining area look so much better. You might not need to buy anything. Or you can add a few pieces or accessories to your wish list according to suggestions in the book. Using this book makes it so much easier to decide what you might like to add later. This book is worth every penny.

Comments: I loved this book and my friends keep borrowing it!
I love this book and was thrilled when I found out there was another one.

I have re-arranged my living room a couple of times, reduced the clutter and hung my pictures at better heights.

A friend borrowed it and fixed her (very small) living room. It had been cramped and uncomfortable, now it's very nice. Her daughter used it when re-vamping her room (now lime green and black - she's a teenager) It looks great.

I finally got it back (I'm a little possesive about it) and then it was borrowed again. I've heard nothing but good things about the help it provides in basic room arrangement.

I agree that if you want colour and Home Beautiful then this is not the book for you. It doesn't pretend to be.

This book is fantastic.

It took me an evening to sit down and look at the pictures and read what they did in each room to make the difference. Then it took me another evening to look at my living room and begin to make changes. And wow! Did I see a difference with just a little bit of moving furniture, moving things out of the room and rehanging my pictures.

It was simple to do and it with the book explaining how and why to set up a room, hang pictures, make an impact and more.

Well worth the money if you don't have the money for a decorator but want some easy to impliment advice.

Enjoy.

Comments: From a decorating phobic....
My idea of decorating, before I read Ms. Ward's book, was to buy a book on decorating, read it, and then buy another one. I never got to the decorating because I was intimidated. Intimidated by the task of decorating and intimidated by the "decorating made easy" books I was reading. A phobic reaction?. "Use What You Have Decorating..." is the first design book that I've read that gave me the basics I felt I needed to get started. And so, finally, I'm getting started. Perhaps I've always needed a book that clearly explained the "10 basics." The before and after photos which were used to illustrate the principle(s) in use were very useful and gave me a chance to test my understanding. (I enjoyed trying to anticipate the changes that would be made. I also would have enjoyed seeing the rooms in color. But the lack of color did not detract from the learning experience.) Thank you Ms. Ward. I hope your second book is as informative as this one. AWL

Comments: Timeless advice--a real rarity for a decorating book!
Reading a decorating book is a little like reading a glossy fashion magazine. Often the spreads look beautiful, but you can't apply them to your own lifestyle because the goods are too expensive, too impractical, and too trendy. Everything will look dated in a few years, much of it isn't functional, yet costs a bundle.

This book transcends that problem by giving easy-to-follow advice about furniture placement. It's kind of like secular Feng Shui. The focus is on making a home that is comfortable, functions well, and looks balanced. Ward sums it all up in a list of principles that can be applied to ANY home, on any budget, all in a very short time frame. The before and after photos are very helpful, even in black and white. Ward is also a great teacher. She seems to really want her readers to start developing their own sense of proportion and flow. She doesn't just tell you what's wrong with each room, she adds clues to the 'before' photos to help you really examine the room and notice the crucial features that are throwing things off balance.

Aside from the general principles, she does include a few notions that might irk some readers (no art in the bedroom, place the pillows on your couch with the points up). But these are few and easy to ignore, and readers shouldn't let it detract from the main thrust of the book.

I checked this book out of the library, along with lots of the oversized, glossy, single-name decorator books, but I can tell even now that this is the only one I'm going to want to buy it eventually.

Comments: Black-and-White Is Beautiful
Warning - this is not a glossy, stylish, looks-good-on-your-coffee-table decorating book. It is a rare breed - a book on decorating that encourages you to trust your own eyes and taste and not spend a fortune on the advice of someone else. It is very - shall I say it - empowering. This is the only decorating book I have read which actually taught me something. Other books might have shown me how to organize my closet or create a faux-marble finish, but this is the first book that has taught me to develop an eye for balance, flow and comfort.

Some readers might find the fact that most of the photographs in this book are in black-and-white to be a drawback. This was my first impression, and what kept me from taking a good look at this book for a while. My attention was drawn to books full of gorgeous color photographs. But I believe now that the lack of color in the photographs is a plus. It prevents the reader from making snap judgments about each room ("I don't like red") and makes him/her focus on what the author intends us to - the balance of the furniture and objects. My advice is to look past this book's plain jane format and learn what it has to teach us.

Comments: Exactly what I needed - real advice for the real world
I'm building a new home. I bought this book after I had cut and collected numerous magazine articles on style, window treatments, etc. I'll still use them, but this book is a WONDERFUL find for how to make a room comfortable and liveable. The before and after, presented with "clues" that teach you how to develop a critical eye was the most useful component of the book.

Her style is a little bland and minimalist - I have a strong Victorian love of objects. I found the black and white pictures preferable to color - color pictures would have distracted from the point - the arrangement of objects and furniture in the room. For purposes of demonstration - I am GLAD she didn't address window treatments or wall treatments. That would be like a before and after of a dieter - the "before" picture - no makeup, hair a mess, etc. - the "after" - true, skinnier, but the makeup and hair made all the difference.

Her examples of existing one function rooms (living room, bedroom) were a bit limiting. I currently have a "great room" which is den, kitchen, dining, etc. She mentioned that in the text, but no case study with pictures before and after.

I'm stuggling to assimilate her concepts of finding the focus in a room, making conversation areas, and working with traffic flow in a multi function great room. I'll get there. But, all that said - I am so glad I bought this book, and I can see it has already made me a bit more observant re: picture and art placement, etc.

I'd strongly recommend this book.

I don't have the knack for looking at a room and knowing what to do with it. This book is amazing... the design principles and the before and after pictures help people like me develop the "designer's eye" and be able to put a great room together starting with what we already have. Even better, these are "real" rooms that people live in, not designer showcases. This is the most valuable decorating book I have ever read, and I've made big improvements to my home without buying a lot. I do agree that the only thing missing from this book is more information/photos about color, but otherwise this is a phenomenal decorating guide. In some ways, I think the black and white photos help you focus on the design principles the author is describing.

We recently moved into a new home and I have immediately begun to put what I have learned into practice. Decorating should be much quicker, easier and satisfying now that I understand the simple secrets I've learned from this book.

Lauri Ward is not a great designer! I am an interior designer and more importantly, a mother. Your refrigerator looks beautiful with your child's paintings on it. Hung with, yes.. magnets! If you enjoy listening to music, why would you get ride of your speakers because some half-wit "professional designer" tells you it looks bad? Your home is still your home. While you want it to be warm and inviting, you still want it to be functional for the way you live. This can be done without spending a fortune! Just look for what attracts YOU. Comments: Solid Principles; Practical Advice
This is a book that I will actually keep, not flip through for ideas and get rid of. Whether you're looking to make over your home or you're starting over in a new home, this is a great book! Being a former interior design student, I have to say her design prinicples are solid, and her advice is practical. After living in apartments for years, I recently purchased a new home. Using what I already knew and much of the info from Lauri's book, I was able to put together an entire house with under $500, and half of that was wall paint and related supplies. Not bad for someone who doesn't have an HGTV show's budget behind them! The only thing I would have preferred is for the book to have color pictures (instead of black & white) because the colors used in a room are every bit a part of the design as the furniture placement.

I ordered two books to read on interior rearrangement; I needed some guidelines to follow. The first book was this one, and the other book was "Decorating for Good:.." by Carole Talbot - a far better book. I like to attack things from a logical set of rules and this book does not offer it. Caroles book offers a set of guidelines to lead you in a direction that is flexible, but has a strong underlying foundation. I read Caroles book first and I loved it,but I was totally dissappointed after reading this one. Too constrictive and opinionated. The pictures are good, but you have to figure it out for yourself, how she came about the solutions she did.

Comments: A Great Investment for Home Decorators
I haven't read all the 100+ reviews already written for this book, so my apologies if I point out things that have already been said.

My favorite thing about this book is that it's straight-to-the-point and simple. Ward doesn't waste our time with unnecessary descriptions and adjectives (i.e. "...the velvety fabric drapes sumptuously over the chair adding a dramatic look"). Instead, she lists and explains the 10 design principles that most designers use (but don't tell us) in books and magazines. In cookbook-format, Ward focuses on topics such as placing furniture in a way that achieves balance and cohesiveness. Among other tips, she explains the rules for creating a focal point, minimizing a "rollercoaster" effect, arranging wall art, and displaying decorative objects and collections. Although, she mainly uses living room areas to explain her design principles, they can be applied to every room; but she also includes a few pages of tips for each room in the house.

Photos of before-and-after rooms are presented in black & white. I really think this was a great idea, because you can see the layout problems and solutions more clearly. I think that color photos would have taken away from that. For both Before and After rooms, a photo and floor plan of each are presented to show the differences. I also liked the little sidebar quizzes in which you look at the before photo and try to pick out the design problems.

The furniture in the room examples may not be that appealing, but they DO look like furniture used in most typical middle-class homes. I like that because it makes the book seem so unpretentious. Ward doesn't give off that snobby designer impression; instead, she seems down-to-earth and in touch with those who don't live in mansions and spend $52,000 on a bed.

I have to comment on one last thing: There's a small section for women on handling the "decorating-phobic" men in their lives. From her experience over the years, she has found that men tend to resist change and that as long as it's functional, they don't usually care what it looks like. So Ward has a little section titled "Here's What You Can Do", and then offers up a scheme to get your man to cooperate. I just think that was so funny and cute! Probably because I can relate. My husband has shirts in his closet from the 90's and REFUSES to part with them, then complains that he doesn't have enough closet space. Anyway...

I don't give many books 5 stars, but it is well-deserved. I refer to it often and have about 18 sticky notes in it, along with the underlined and highlighted passages. I continue to buy the beautiful designer books and magazines for ideas and inspiration, but now (proudly) when I look at a photo I can see the design principles at work and how the "look" was achieved.

Comments: Ten Stars
If I could have given this book ten stars, I would have. Christopher Lowell and his Seven Layers of Design should have taken a page from Laurie Ward's excellent book which was practical, easy to read and sensible. The "before and after" pictures of a variety of rooms helped greatly. She was right -- in less than 1/2 hour, using her principles I transformed my crowded, awkwardly-arrange living room into a beautiful and stunning arrangement that encourages conversation and looks much larger at the same time.
This book really helps in that the design principles are adaptable and applicable to any size room or home and really gives you concrete ideas to use in creating comfortable and beautifully arranged living spaces. Brava Laurie and thanks!

But you can find better. Most of these rooms have a fireplace as focal point. Don't have a fireplace/ You'll find only parts of the book useful.
Another BIG MINUS - the lack of color pictures. Color is an important design element and one bright chair can throw off an otherwise "balanced" room. Using color appropriately, whether to support a traditional design scheme or to inject an element of surprise or whimsy is a basic decorating principle.
Finally, many of the rooms are already quite dated. Sure, you'll get a nicer look if you follow the tips in the book. What you WON'T get is a room that seems in style - today. If you're a traditionalist, that may not matter - but I found some of the traditional rooms seemed out of style too (were they faux traditonal or something?).
Having said all this, there are some basic design principles that you may find quite useful. But you'll find the same ones - and more-in updated, more complete books.

Comments: How to arrange your couch and loveseat
This book was a huge dissapointment. Every single layout was the same. Arrange your sofa and loveseat facing each other, throw a crappy plant against the wall.

The pictures were dated looking and in black and white.

There is nothing this book has to offer that you cannot glean from watching 1 evening of HGTV.

Comments: The Best Room Makover Book
Once in a while a book has a great impact on your life and Use What You Have Decorating is one of those books for me. My house looks like I brought in an expensive decorator but I did it myself just from what I learned by reading it.
The title promises you can transform your home quickly and the results confirm that. Principles are shown in photos of real homes and the author makes it easy to understand what was wrong with the rooms and how the mistakes were corrected without buying furniture. What is most impressive is that the rooms in the book look totally different in one or two hours.
It took me more than three hours to finish my living room and dining room with a little help from my better half and now both rooms look amazing.
If you want to give your house a fast makeover look no further.

Comments: Good but needs color photos
I enjoyed this book very much and liked the many tips offered. However, it would have come to life much better with color photos. This is especially true of the before and after shots. It is also very difficult to argue/advise on color matters while using black and white. I would recommend this book but would strongly suggest the color improvement in future sequels.

Comments: Some flaws, but overall a really useful book
The good: the author's room plans actually take into account furniture placement around windows and glass doors as well as entry points. Her examples show REAL homes with odd, mismatched furniture. Clear before and after pictures and floor plans, even if they are in black and white. She has some good rules of thumb to at least think of, which you may or may not agree with, and tends toward the neutral (white/beige) as far as paint--you can always add color with your choice of furnishings and art. She tells you which one should win out between beautiful view and fireplace when you have both in a room.

The bad: Most of it is about living rooms, and she apparently assumes that you are doing a good deal of formal entertaining there. There are virtually no ideas for people who use their living rooms for anything else, e.g. home office, exercise room, playroom, etc. Not everyone entertains in their house--some have backyard BBQs, and others entertain at restaurants or the local park.

Where I disagreed with her: If you have a library of books that you actually use, you would never organize them by size, you would organize them by subject/author, except of course for your truly oversized books. Pillows on sofas--hmmm. I think you can use them on futons or sofas with hard armrests, but on your typical overstuffed sofa, they're overkill. Would rather see a nice handmade afghan.

To the critics who were upset that she "ignored" the TV: It is an etiquette thing, actually. The TV is not supposed to be more important than your guests, and she is by no means the only decorator who says to hide the TV in an armoire or better yet, put it in another room. These days a lot of the newer homes have dedicated "home theater" type rooms, anyway--with a less-expensive alternative being a spare bedroom.

Besides, if you're having a Superbowl party or some such TV-related event, it would be smarter to have a TV in the kitchen/family room area where hopefully there is no carpet, and nothing furniture-wise that could be ruined by food.

Bottom line: This book has a lot of useful ideas for furniture arranging, geared primarily to the living room and family room, but you can also use them as a jump-off point for rearranging other rooms. Some good ideas for some of the other rooms, like dining rooms you don't use because your kitchen is plenty big enough to eat in. I thought this book was much, much better than Decorating for Good by Carol Talbott.

Comments: The best book for do-it-yourself decorators
No other book has ever shown us novice decorators how to light a room, arrange our art and furniture as well as this one. It is easy to follow and sticks to its promise that we do not have to buy all new furniture to make our home look really pretty.
Anyone who would like to give their home an extreme makeover without throwing away what they already have will be truly amazed at what they can accomplish after reading Use What You Have Decorating.
