| Renowned photographer Jon Ortner spent ten years documenting New York City in its best light, those moments before sunrise and at sunset when the city emanates a radiant beauty. In this lavishly produced volume, he presents 200 full-color photographs of the city's neighborhoods and landmarks, including breathtaking views of its skyline, from the George Washington Bridge and the Statue of Liberty to Rockefeller Center and the Chrysler Building. Perhaps most moving of all are the portraits of the World Trade Center Towers, a tragic loss to the city preserved here in the muted colors of twilight. Captions reveal little-known facts about Manhattan and two glorious foldout images present panoramic views.
As Western lavishness collided with striking native elements in the vast reaches of the East African savanna, the Safari style was born. Blending ethnic African with colonial European, the look emphasizes relaxed yet luxurious living, drawing on an elemental approach to texture, color, and pattern, and on indigenous materials and design. Exploring 21 spectacular homes in glorious color, Safari Style takes us on an expedition through a fantastic Moorish residence in Kenya, a hotel in Zanzibar masquerading as a Persian palace, an Italianate villa on a former coffee plantation in Nairobi, a tree house hideaway perched in the Ngong hills, and a host of other extraordinary dwellings. Though most of us will never live anywhere so unique, we can certainly find countless great ideas here to incorporate into our own more humble abodes. This is about a lot more than a few animal-print pillows and some swags of mosquito netting; it's about Old World elegance and evocations of the pleasures of exotic travel, even if we only get to enjoy it from the comforts of a cushy mudcloth-covered armchair. --Amy Handy

Betzina is renowned in the sewing world, and this is the next installment in her line of very successful sewing books.
Betzina is known primarily for her books on garment sewing. In this collaboration with interior decorator Valentine, she switches gears to explore the world of sewing accessories for the home. In addition to complete, richly illustrated instructions for dozens of pillows, window treatments, table coverings, bed linens, and gifts for children and pets, there are solid sewing instructions that the reader can use in myriad future sewing projects. Highly recommended for all public library sewing collections Copyright 2002 Reed Business Information, Inc.
Ignore the "home dec" vernacular and even the authors' breezy way of assuming that, hey, anyone with any IQ at all can master a sewing machine. Because here, in Betzina and Valentine's fourth book, is a literal font of crafty creativity. Where else could you find instructions for a kitty litter box cover? Or a TV remote-control pillow holder? Sure, some of the more than 50 patterns are a bit silly. Yet what draws and holds readers' attention are excellent directions, work sheets for measuring such size-variable items as window coverings and futons, good process photographs, and a bevy of useful information--about single and double welts, gathering, stretch velour, and other related topics. Envision any home accessory, and chances are it's inside Betzina and Valentine's collection. Barbara Jacobs Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

| Seaside, Florida is a town designed as an "ideal" community in the Southern vernacular style, where houses have front porches and verandahs, picket fences and sleeping porches, and pitched tin roofs with ample overhangs. Seaside, along with other new planned towns and communities, sets an important precedent for all new small towns and will long be looked to as a model for those living in tropical climes, on the water, or in coastal communities.
Now, for the very first time, the reader is given a privileged view of the inside of this extraordinary community-how people actually live in it-how they have arranged their spaces, furnished their homes, and planted their gardens to take advantage of the beauty by which they are surrounded. This book, as the title suggests, lays out a vision of coastal living based on this ideal community.
