| | With more than 150 color photographs, comprehensive text, and extensive resource lists of recommended products, manufacturers, and retailers, Good Green Kitchens is a must-have-whether taking small steps to a green kitchen, or planning a thorough remodel. This newest book from green living advocate, Jennifer Roberts, is loaded with inspiration and information for creating a dream green kitchen. What makes a kitchen green? Good Green Kitchens shows that eco-friendly design is a continuum that's shaded from light to dark green. At the light green end are easy-to-do steps such as choosing less polluting paints or selecting energy-efficient appliances. At the darker green end are strategies like using certified or reclaimed wood, consciously choosing to simplify or downsize, or using the kitchen project as a launching point for greening the whole house. Good Green Kitchens gives the low-down on what's green and what's not when it comes to kitchen design. It includes: up-close profiles of beautiful, green kitchens and the people who created them; tips for environmentally responsible redecorating, remodeling, and building from the ground up; in-depth chapters on greener alternatives for floors, cabinets, countertops, and appliances; strategies for greening the whole house; tips for keeping costs in check; and much more. |

| The 27 homes in Good House Cheap House prove that good design doesn't have to cost a fortune. What goes into making a good, cheap house? As writer Kira Obolensky discovers, there are three main ingredients: adventuresome homeowners who are actively involved; cutting-edge architects and designers who can solve tough design challenges; and an array of innovative uses of materials. Industrial bridge washers make for gorgeous mantelpiece rosettes, old concrete subflooring is given new life with rich-hued stain, and glass sliding doors make for windows that are oversized and affordable. From a Texas farmhouse to a loft in St. Paul, to a prefab cabin on the Wisconsin prairie, these houses, in which anyone would feel at home, display a wonderful mix of design smarts and budget savvy. "Good House Cheap House is chock full of great ideas and creative solutions for those of us on a budget-but even the less financially-challenged can learn a thing or two about stylish and innovative design." --Charles Burbridge, designer, HGTV's Design on a Dime "The cookie-cutter house trend has been around long enough. With its outside-the-box ideas and great resources, Good House Cheap House proves you can build a unique space without emptying your bank account." --Amber Jones, Editor, do! Magazine |

| Nikitas, the host of San Francisco cable television's The Power of Positive Painting, promises us "grand" finishes for walls and floors in this otherwise down-to-earth guide for the do-it-yourselfer.Well, why not? We've already observed all manner of colorful role models in this field-the crafty New Englander, the practical Midwesterner, the cracker-barrel philosopher from the South. Here we get the laid-back Californian, but we are not urged to get blissed out at a Zen monastery in preparation for a redo. This is instead a basic presentation of three home improvement projects-wall painting, wallpapering and floor refinishing-in unintimidating plain talk. Instructions are friendly and offer a pointedly ecological awareness. Nikitas's firm and gentle personality comes across. Sidebars, called "The Voice of Experience," are useful hints in the form of cautionary tales narrated with a cheerful nonchalance (e.g., a painfully funny story about hanging a very long strip of wallpaper horizontally). How-to illustrations are direct and to the point. It's a good book for coaxing the wary beginner, rather than a source book for the hardened DIY addict. Photos not seen by PW. | the subtitle: "The Book That Exposes Consumer Fraud And Guides You Around It!" explains the thrust of the book. It is a consumer's guide to carpeting and was supported by Cal-Perg (Ralph Nader's California consumer advocate organization).
Both the present and past president of the California Carpet Cleaning Institute has endorsed this book.
What You Don't Know About Your Carpet Is Costing You Thousands of Dollars!
These days nearly everyone has carpet in his or her home and you probably do too. Wall to wall carpet is as common today as a car in the driveway or a television set in the living room. After a home and an automobile it is the third most expensive investment made in your lifetime.
The majority of people today know very little about this expensive investment. The sad truth is that less than one percent of the population knows enough about carpeting to make the proper choice of purchase, or even the best method of cleaning.
Ten years of research into consumer floor covering problems has made author Robert L. Selby one of the most knowledgeable men in his field. His experiences with home owners, renters, real estate and property management firms have brought into focus the tremendous lack of knowledge that the consumer has in regard to their floor covering., he also has uncovered widespread fraud, incompetence and deceptive advertising by carpet retailers and so-called "professional" carpet cleaners.
"Knowledge is the key to protection", states the author. So it is through this book that you, the consumer, may be aided in all phases of floor covering... from purchases to sots and stains and every thing in between. The Great Carpet Cover-Up may well be one of your most important possessions.
