"Focusing on all things simple and pure, echoing the current trend toward uncluttered interiors with clean outlines, crisp fabrics, and natural materials," designer Jane Cumberbatch's unique approach to interior design captured the imaginations of millions in 1996 with the release of her book Pure Style. Now, the essence of Cumberbatch's design ideas is brought to life in photographs and words in this classic wall calendar. From a simple dining room scene to a cozy blue-and-white bedroom, a gathering of lavender sprigs on antique lace to a kitchen in classic white, noted photographer Harry Bourne's pictures speak to the "aesthetic and the sensual of everyday life." Brief explanatory text noting the design elements accompanies the photos and completes this beautiful calendar.

A Bathroom Trimmed in Sentiment

It was the bathroom that seduced a couple into buying a graceful old house outside of St. Louis. It was a big room on the second floor, and when husband and wife saw the light streaming in from the large window, they decided immediately that they wanted to live in this home. The owners wished to retain as well as enhance the lightness and cheerfulness of the room, so their color scheme included sunny peach for the walls and lots of white for the furnishings.

Looking for treasures everywhere, the wife discovered an heirloom dress in an antiques store and made it an integral part of her own family's heritage, christening her two sons in it. The dress, an image that never fails to evoke fond memories, now hangs in the bathroom next to the cream-colored linens inherited from the wife's mother.

The Private HouseTotal Hits - 133  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating
“There are those who spend lifetimes in houses that have nothing to do with who they really are. They may be perfectly designed, yet if they fail to reflect the personalities of the people who live in them, the very essence of intimacy is missing and this absence is disturbingly visible.”
—From “a window inside”

One of the most influential designers working in America today, Rose Tarlow knows that creating a truly beautiful room is as much an emotional matter as it is one of color, light, fabric, and furniture. In The Private House, she offers insights into the mind of a master designer—as well as a glimpse into some of the extraordinary homes she’s decorated.
Drawing upon her wealth of experience as an antiquaire and a designer, Ms. Tarlow discusses and illustrates simple principles of creative design that are appropriate to any home. Always arrange your comfortable, upholstered furniture first, she writes; pay special attention to how light affects your spaces; and use carpets as background only, never as the focus of a room.

With chapters on lighting, fabrics, color, and intimate spaces, Ms. Tarlow encourages readers to plan and decorate each area of their house with elegance and personal style, covering all the essential elements of design—including the emotional ones. The result should be a house that welcomes family and friends, one that enhances our quality of life.
