| | Murray Eiland's Oriental Rugs has long been the standard introduction to oriental rugs. The authors have extended the range of the book by incorporating new material on Chinese and Indian rugs, and the text has been completely revised. The plates of all the illustrations have been remade, and many of the rugs shown are new to this edition. The book's focus is the nineteenth- and twentieth-century weaving of the Middle and Far East. This is introduced by a brief history of carpets, followed by a discussion of weaving techniques, dyes, and design. Traditional practices are described, along with modern innovations, such as computer-aided design. The use of synthetic dyes and the recent revival of natural dyes are given a balanced appraisal. The importance and methodology of technical analysis is firmly emphasized. The endmatter includes extensive notes, a bibliography, and an index. The book includes more than 330 color illustrations, the majority of them new to this edition. They show classic pieces along with others that are more likely to be available to readers. Where possible, the captions include a structural analysis. |

| | Sakhai, a London rug dealer from a family of carpet weavers, shares his expertise on history, identification, and value of oriental carpets in this reasonably priced book. He offers tips on judging materials, dyes, patterns, age, and condition when selecting a carpet to buy. In handy guidebook format he describes different types of carpets, accompanied by color and black-and-white photographs (color photographs not seen). The author discusses value in comparative terms only, so prospective buyers will need to study the market to determine fair prices. Caucasian Carpets & Covers is a scholarly work by the curators who assembled the 1994 exhibit "From Kuba to Kars" at the Textile Museum in Washington, D.C. Their book includes knotted pile rugs from the Caucasus in addition to the materials in that exhibit. The text is detailed and comprehensive, accompanied by maps and photographs, mostly in color. Much of the historical material is from Russian sources available only in the former Soviet Union. Unfortunately, full-page color-detail photographs have no captions, making it necessary for the user to search through the volume for the source photograph to identify the detail. Otherwise, the presentation is excellent; this is a major work in the field. | | What an absolutely perfect craft Frank Cooper has come up with in these miniature needlepoint Persian, Caucasian, and Turkish carpets! They are simple, beautiful, unusual, and portable. The miniatures are typically between 6-9 inches in width and 10-16 inches in length, and though they are quite detailed, the stitches are not impossibly tiny. Cooper uses a #18 canvas (18 stitches per 2.5 cm), which allows these little jewels to work up surprisingly quickly. The instructions are plainly written; the charts are the book's only real drawback, as they must really be enlarged on a copier to be usable by the average needleworker. But the patterns are authentic, taken from rugs Cooper has studied closely in his travels, and the color photographs and the historical background he adds to each rug's description are alone worth the price of the book. |
