| Nikitas, the host of San Francisco cable television's The Power of Positive Painting, promises us "grand" finishes for walls and floors in this otherwise down-to-earth guide for the do-it-yourselfer.Well, why not? We've already observed all manner of colorful role models in this field-the crafty New Englander, the practical Midwesterner, the cracker-barrel philosopher from the South. Here we get the laid-back Californian, but we are not urged to get blissed out at a Zen monastery in preparation for a redo. This is instead a basic presentation of three home improvement projects-wall painting, wallpapering and floor refinishing-in unintimidating plain talk. Instructions are friendly and offer a pointedly ecological awareness. Nikitas's firm and gentle personality comes across. Sidebars, called "The Voice of Experience," are useful hints in the form of cautionary tales narrated with a cheerful nonchalance (e.g., a painfully funny story about hanging a very long strip of wallpaper horizontally). How-to illustrations are direct and to the point. It's a good book for coaxing the wary beginner, rather than a source book for the hardened DIY addict. Photos not seen by PW. | | Often an afterthought when it comes to home decorating, floors, curtains, and lighting are essential to creating a complete, finished look in any room. These books are "very well organized," explains Cynthia Conigliaro. "They have great illustrations, and they're organized by style." If you know you want hard tile floors, you can skip right to that section of the book. On the other hand, if you're clueless about which type of floor will perfectly accent your living room, leaf through the book to figure out which combination of colors, textures, and finishes is appropriate. Each book includes a "Practicalities" section that explains how to assess your needs and shows you how to do renovations yourself. There is also a directory of suppliers. |

| | Many people treat floors as an afterthought when decorating or simply settle for what's already there, but floors actually have a great influence on a room and can even have the power to create the room's overall feeling. By appealing to the senses--the warmth of carpet, the scent of wood, the coolness of tile, the nuances of color and pattern--floors impart much to any space. Floor Magic explains in detail how to select and maintain flooring that best suits your room and your style. Whether your preferences run to stone, ceramics, mosaic, wood, carpet, sheet flooring, or even to more unusual floor materials such as concrete, metal, or glass, this thorough guide "covers" it all. |
