Q
We need recommendations for "bulletproof" carpet for installation with pad over bare concrete. Much of floor is substantially sub-grade, though with a walk-out. We are installing approx. 95 yds. so value is a high priority -- not cheapness though. What fibre is best? Best wearing construction? How much pad? Our most disappointing major purchases in past twenty years have all been carpet. Help us please, to improve our record.
A
1. Make sure your sub floor is dry... water can actually 'wick' up from under concrete. There is a simple moisture test that can be run...or you can do it yourself by taking a 12 oz clear glass ...turning it upside down and taping it to the floor all around the lip of the glass... let it sit for several days and
see if there is any moisture or dew inside the glass... if there is you need to seal the concrete or take other measures that will insure a dry floor.
2. Nylon is the best fiber...
3. I would not recommend padding in any area below grade... glue the carpet direct to the floor with a good adhesive.
4. A dense commercial grade nylon carpet will give you years of great performance with the proper care.
I hope these things help... and do let us know how it goes.
all the best,
Jerry Mascari
