Upholstery Conservation: Principles and Practice (Butterworth - Heinemann Series in Conservation andTotal Hits - 216  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating

This well referenced book provides an amply illustrated publication on upholstery conservation which discusses and reviews the issues related to the care, interpretation and treatment of upholstered furniture.

Through many well illustrated case studies the inter-disciplinary collaboration fundamental to upholstery conservation, and the complex decision-making process involved in the treatment of upholstered furniture, are made evident. The case histories are contributed by leading international practitioners in the field and concern objects and collections in the care of English Heritage, the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and other internationally renowned institutions.

Likewise, the contributors, from both sides of the Atlantic, are world-renowned specialists and leaders in this area of conservation working for the public and private sectors. The case histories, illustrated in colour, black and white and specially prepared line drawings, concern object treatment and documentation, the conservation of information, the function and the artefact. They range from the documentation of eighteenth century removable chair covers and the treatment of a nineteenth century carriage to a twentieth century foam-filled chair belonging to a museum.

* Principles and practice are demonstrated through a series of case histories
* Provides a common vocabulary and point of reference across the conservation disciplines
* Includes contributions from world-renowned specialists from the public and private sectors

'Upholstery Conservation: Principles and Practice is a vital reference in a new field, and will be of interest to a wide range of people, not just conservators and curators. It is a fine addition to the Butterworth Heinemann series.'
Conservation News

'Upholstery Conservation is a practical, well-developed textbook on the current state of the art. It will encourage the dissemination of information between people responsible for the conservation of upholstered items and help to improve the practice of upholstery conservation by encouraging the partnership of different specialists to acheive the best outcome.'
Museum National Magazine

'The book sets an excellent standard; it is a major contribution to the study of upholstery conservation in Britain and America and provides an invaluable work of reference upon which further studies can be based.'
The Furniture History Society Newsletter

'This book is useful not only for those who are involved in furniture or textile conservation, but also for scholars and students in the other fields of conservation of cultural property and for the curators who work with furniture collections.'

Cushions and CurtainsTotal Hits - 209  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating

A beautifully designed, easy–to–follow guide to making cushions and curtains, with a dozen projects, clear instructions, and 300 color photos and diagrams.

Cushions and Curtains takes you through all the steps of learning to make these home accessories. Advancing through the basics of understanding fabrics and introducing the necessary equipment, it guides you through twelve projects, giving you the confidence and skill to make cushions and curtains with a professional finish. Cushions and Curtains will teach you how to: choose fabrics, calculate the quantity of material needed, and use a sewing machine to best effect; make square, round, boxed, and piped cushions with zippers (techniques that can also be used with footstools); create classic lined curtains finished with valences, pelmets, and tie–backs before progressing to interlined curtains and Roman blinds. Lavishly illustrated in color throughout, this is a complete handbook for beginners and a fresh source of ideas for those more experienced.

Needlecrafts teacher Openshaw here provides directions for constructing basic cushions, pillows, curtains, valances, pelmets, tiebacks, and blinds for the home. Her meticulously detailed instructions at first appear a bit overly complicated, but that is the fault of the layout, which would have benefited from a greater separation between the projects and the better-labeled figures. Amateur sewers will be well guided by this book, making it a good choice for public libraries.
