Upholstery Basics (Singer Sewing Reference Library) (Singer)Total Hits - 282  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating
I have several books so far about upholstery, but by far, this singer book is the best. The title is not misleading. It is about basics, but with it's common sense instructions and useful illustrations, the techniques demonstrated can be combined and used to reupholster many styles of furniture. If you are looking for a book to teach you about more advanced techniques, you will have to look elsewhere, but if you are just beginning, then I can't think of a better source to take fear out of your first project.
Gave me the assurance that my project, sofa and love seat, could be done easily and have a professional look. Pictures and text make it easy to follow and apply the instructions. Suggested tools are a must for desired results.
An Excellent Reference and How-to Book
Like the others in the Singer Reference Library series, this book is a step-by-step manual. The instructions are clear; the illustrations meaningful. Its title says it all: 'Upholstery Basics'-- from the ground up, so to speak. I have not done any projects yet, but am now not afraid to try.

Slipcovers (Creative Textiles)Total Hits - 208  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating
As an experienced seamstress that wanted to branch out into slipcovers, I found this book to be the answer to my prayers. I have several other books that have much prettier covers and use more glamorous fabrics but nothing that even comes close to the detailed steps provided in this book.

First off, making a slipcover is hard work. Nothing easy about it. I liked this book because it covers, in detail, each standard arm shape of sofas and chairs and gives pictures of exactly how to design and construct each type. The steps for making cushion covers is excellent. From how to make the pattern, making welting, putting in the zipper, to sewing the final seam. I refer to it each time because of the detailed construction pictures.

Most other slipcover books make way too many assumptions about the construction steps or try to describe things in text without pictures. This book does both very well.

This is a well-done book. It offers clear, detailed photos (yesssss!!!), instead of those TOTALLY UN-HELPFUL DRAWINGS that so many silly books have nowadays. I am going to finally attempt my first sewing project with the help of 'Slipcovers" by Creative Textiles.

Pillows (Creative Touches)Total Hits - 204  |  Hits Today - 0Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating

Introduces techniques essential to strong sewing skills. - Includes reference section for selecting fabrics. --This text refers to the Spiral-bound edition.

As a pillow designer, I was skeptical that I would find information that was new to me. In this book I found many tips that ensure a perfect result, along with wonderful pictures and detailed explanations of techniques. Even if not all of the pillow styles appeal to you, you'll be happy with this book as a guide.

Being a beginner, many sewing books (I have about 8 reference books!) are too advanced and ambitious for me and take for granted that everyone knows all the sewing terms. This book is such a no brainer that I am thinking of getting the rest of the series.
