Small Spaces for Modern Living : Making the Most of Your Indoor Space Total Hits - 249  |  Hits Today - 2Rating:   Rating Average (0)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating
In this copiously illustrated title, Atkins, a writer and consultant for a variety of high-profile shelter publications, offers a guide to creating stylish, functional interiors that make the most of small spaces while leaving uncluttered "breathing room." Addressed to design novices, the introductory sections take readers through the stages of renovation planning, with sections about assessing the space and basic design principles of color and light. A summary of several common styles, with lists of corresponding materials, furniture, and accessories, closes the section. Subsequent chapters are organized according to living areas, including children's rooms. Sidebars with space-saving solutions and suggestions for building materials that work best for various areas of the house appear throughout, while a representative successful room closes each of the final sections. The text occasionally veers into trite common sense; to reduce kitchen clutter, for example, "do not let dishes accumulate." But the wealth of sharp color photos and practical hints makes this an attractive, useful resource for anyone facing an interior-design project. Gillian Engberg

Do you have an ugly duckling kitchen? If so, take this book and learn how to transform it into the pretty and practical swan it was meant to be. Whether your kitchen is galley-shaped, U-shaped, L-shaped, or just plain small, this hands-on workbook offers ideas for kitchens that suit every lifestyle, from city singles to growing families.

The kitchen is the heart of every home: the place where we gather with our families and friends; where we prepare and share food; where we work, entertain, and eat. But many kitchens were not designed with all these functions in mind. As a result, they are too small, too dark, and too cramped-when what we want is spacious, light, and comfortable.

With Small Spaces Beautiful Kitchens, you can change all that. In its pages, you'll learn how to turn your kitchen-no matter how small, how drab, how dysfunctional-into the kitchen of your dreams.

The kitchen is the heart of every home: the place where families gather, where food is prepared and shared, where we work, entertain, and eat. But many kitchens were not designed to suit this elevated role; they are small, dark, and cramped rather than spacious, light, and comfortable.

Small Spaces, Beautiful Kitchens shows how to turn any size space into the kitchen of your dreams—whether your personal style leans toward country, modern, or chic. Author Tara McLellan proves that small kitchens can be even more comfortable and efficient than larger ones. She urges the reader to focus on three basic elements: carefully thought- out organization, clever storage solutions, and space-boosting color and design features. Step-by-step instructions, illustrations, and advice from the pros walk readers through every aspect of planning, design, and implementation, from making a wish list and establishing a budget to deciding on materials for cabinets and flooring to creating stylish window displays and wall patterns.

Whether a kitchen is galley-shaped, U-shaped, L-shaped—or just plain small—this hands-on workbook offers ideas for kitchens that suit every lifestyle, from city singles to growing families.

Tracy McLellan is a veteran design writer. Formerly of Metropolitan Home Magazine, she is the author of Fabric Harmony (Rockport, 2001). She lives in New Orleans.

Small Spaces: Stylish Ideas for Making More of Less in the HomeTotal Hits - 345  |  Hits Today - 1Rating:   Rating Average (1)    |  View Ratings  |  Add Your Rating
Small Spaces is about living comfortably and using space wisely, and where better to find ideas on that subject than Japan, one of the world's most urban and densely populated countries? Tokyo resident Azby Brown, a distinguished architect and designer, has assembled dozens of creative solutions to space and storage problems, illustrating them with photographs and plans of actual living environments in contemporary homes. The key to his approach is what might be called "The Three Cs"-compact, comfortable, and convenient. Use of space is reconsidered, with easy living always the uppermost goal. A living room is opened up by creating level changes or "joining it with the exterior." A staircase can double as a chest of drawers, a space beneath the floor can serve as a kitchen pantry or hiding place for a disappearing bed: an adjustable table can serve different purposes at different heights. From top to bottom, in bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and hall, Azby Brown presents solutions to the problems of inner space, illustrated with dozens of full-color photographs, drawings, and architectural plans. Small Spaces will be a lifesaver for all those with growing families, shrinking resources, and limited room to grow-or indeed anyone who wants to transform a disorganized, cluttered environment into an orderly, attractive living area.

As real estate costs go ever higher, many of us are living in smaller spaces than we would like. In Small Spaces, interiors author Rebecca Tanqueray presents a wide variety of solutions to make even a studio apartment feel more spacious and comfortable. Many spaces can be expanded visually through color or lighting, in others, Tanqueray explores the organization of space, storage and the use of multi-functional furniture. The inspirational spaces showcased in Small Spaces are documented thoroughly with beautiful photographs and floor plans, to inspire you in the process of enlarging your own space.

Starting with Making the Most of your Space, Rebecca shows how clever use of color, lighting or other elements makes for a coherent home with a feeling of space. The Zones explores the organization of space, including areas for living, cooking and eating, working, bathing and sleeping. A Space Savers page at the end of each section captures key points. Finally, Solutions, tackles the elements to the compact home - including dividing space, using color, lighting and texture and clever storage and furniture.

Small Spaces will help you create a more uncluttered and serene home that works.
